How to Measure for your Antique Mirror
Because every piece of Rough Old Glass is made to measure, accurate sizes are the most important thing you can give us. Here's how to measure for the most common projects. If in doubt, just ask: we're always happy to check your measurements with you.
Before you start
- Measure in millimetres, not centimetres or inches.
- Use a steel tape measure and measure twice.
- Always give sizes as width x height.
- Walls and ceilings are rarely perfectly square, so take several measurements of each dimension.
Splashbacks
- Wait until worktops and units are installed before taking final measurements.
- Measure the width at the top, middle and bottom, and the height at the left, centre and right. Send us all the figures and we'll work from the smallest.
- Mark the position of every socket, switch, pipe and fixing. Measure from the bottom left corner of the splashback area to the centre of each one, and note each socket's size.
- Let us know about anything the glass needs to fit around, such as window sills, cooker hoods or extractor fans.
- If the splashback sits behind a hob, range cooker or AGA, tell us so we can toughen the glass.
Wall panels and feature walls
- Measure the full wall area, including any recesses, beams or sloping ceilings.
- Mark light switches, sockets and wall lights in the same way as for splashbacks.
- Large areas are usually made up of several panels. Let us know if you have a preferred panel layout; otherwise we'll suggest one based on our maximum sizes and the look you want.
Framed mirrors
- Decide whether your size is the overall size of the mirror, including the frame, or the glass size. Please tell us which.
- For a mirror over a fireplace or in an alcove, measure the space available and allow a little clearance on each side.
Awkward shapes and templates
For curved walls, arches, sloping ceilings or anything out of square, we may ask for a physical template made from hardboard or card. We can advise on how to make one.
Prefer us to measure?
We offer a full site survey, supply and installation service for residential and commercial projects. Our installers are based in London, so travel costs apply outside the M25. Allow 6–8 weeks from survey to installation.
