Antique mirror glass and verre eglomise (reverse gilded glass) are versatile materials that can create the illusion of space in any room.

Their reflective properties can make a small room appear larger, and can also enhance the natural light in a space.

Rough Old Glass can be used for a variety of applications, including feature walls, ceilings, framed mirrors and furniture. It can also add a decorative element to a room, with bespoke shapes, sizes and different levels of patina available to suit any style of interior.

From the soft and delicate Foxed antique mirror finish to the more dramatic Gold Swathe, whether used in a modern or traditional setting, antique mirror glass can transform the look and feel of a room, while also providing practical benefits.

Many designers, architects and contractors are surprised that we are able to offer toughened mirror glass.

At Rough Old Glass our process starts with clear or body tinted transparent glass. Cut to size, edges polished or bevelled and toughened, we then hand silver the toughened panels to create toughened antiqued mirrors.

Where mirror panels or tiles are being used behind a heat source such as an AGA or where there are socket cutouts required it's imperitive that toughened glass is used to prevent cracks occurring during or after installation. 

In commercial environments too - toughened mirror glass is often the only acceptable material.

The benefits of toughened mirror:

• High Impact Resistance (At least four times stronger than annealed glass)
• Heat Resistant up to 400 degrees Celsius
• Complies with British Standards BS EN 12150

• Vintage – our most popular finish for AGA and kitchen splashbacks. Vintage offers a medium level of distressing, giving a softly aged, classic antique mirror look without feeling too busy.
• Foxed – ideal for dressing rooms, bedrooms and living areas where you want a chic, understated feel. Foxed is a lightly distressed finish, adding character while still reflecting plenty of light.
• Really Rough – perfect when you want to make more of a statement. Really Rough has a stronger, more dramatic level of distressing and works beautifully on feature walls and chimney breasts. The example shown here is a panelled antiqued mirrored chimney breast created for Anglo Oriental Antiques.

All of our antiqued mirror and verre eglomise finishes can be made into custom sized tiles and splash backs.

Our process begins with cutting clear glass to your exact specifications, polishing the edges and making cutouts for electrical sockets or drilling holes for utility rails. The glass is the toughened to make it suitable for use behind a heat source such as a range cooker or AGA. 

We then individually hand silver and distress the toughened glass and deliver to your door. We also offer a measure and installation service for more complicated projects.

Along with our Antiqued Mirror our Verre Eglomise finishes can all be applied to toughened glass to make them suitable for use as splash backs, even behind a heat source such as an AGA. The leaves of gold, silver or copper are applied to the reverse side of the glass so the face is as easy to care for as any glass or mirror.
